Each quarter, your Statewide Steward committee will select one steward's story to be highlighted — their journey, their impact, and the difference they make for members at their worksite, in their local, or across the state.
We need your recommendations to give our stewards the recognition they deserve. Help us lift up the great work happening at your worksite or in your local!

Questions About the Steward Program?
What is a steward and why does it matter?
Union stewards are the frontline leaders of our union who are trusted coworkers who support members, enforce our contract, and help ensure every voice is heard on the job. Stewards play a critical role in protecting workplace rights, building strong worksites, and connecting members to the broader power of our union. By becoming a steward, you’re not just helping solve problems; you’re strengthening solidarity and making our union stronger for everyone.
How can I become a steward?
Stewards are the face of our union. Our Steward Program requires Local President recommendation and Council President approval before a member can become a steward and attend our ‘Stewards in Action’ (SIA) Intro Steward Class.
How do I start the process?
• First, if you do not know who your Local President is or which local you belong to, reach out to the MCC at [email protected] right away to find out! Let them know you’re interested in becoming a steward and would like to be connected to your local president!
• Second, email your Local President sharing your interest in becoming a steward, request what steps they require, and ask them to recommend you to the AFSCME Council 28 President to attend our SIA Training.
• Third, if approved, watch your personal email for future recruitment to attend an upcoming SIA class either virtually or one near you!
I’ve taken SIA - what’s next?
- Reach out to the MCC right away to set up your mentorship ([email protected] / 1-833-MCC-WFSE)
- Take an Intro to MAT training as soon as possible, as well as any other CSE you may be interested in (see more here)
- Let your Council Rep know you need a CBA training!
What are the requirements for current Stewards to maintain their certification?
Once you have completed SIA and Intro to MAT, the following is needed to maintain good standing:
- Attend a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) training every 2 years
- Complete at least 2 Continuing Steward Education classes (CSEs) every 2 years such as:
- WFSE Shop Steward Trainings (in-person, and /or online; see more here)
- Local/worksite-specific trainings
- RiseUp or other Council 28 workshops focused on representation or organizing
- Workshops at labor conferences (such as Labor Notes or AFSCME Convention)
What if I missed my CBA training the last time it was offered?
If you are currently a steward and missed the last CBA training, contact your WFSE Council Rep to express your interest in attending the next available session. These trainings are offered several times a year in various areas.
How can I find out about upcoming steward and member leader trainings?
