WFSE Leadership Summit

Join Us May 31 and June 1! Learn How to Run Your Local Union

Join us for WFSE’s Leadership Summit, happening Friday, May 31st and Saturday, June 1st at the Sea-Tac Hilton located at 17620 International Blvd, Seattle, WA 98188.

What workshops are available?

We are holding sessions on a wide range of topics which are relevant to local officers, including best practices in communications, financial reports, having great meetings, understanding membership reports, and more! You will be able to indicate some preferences on the registration form. We suggest that you coordinate with your fellow officers so you do not all select the same first preference.

Day 1 Workshops and Events

  • Local Communications: Panel Discussion and Guide to Available Resources
Learn what resources are available to your local union to create a website, update or create a logo, launch your own social media channels, and more. You'll also hear from WFSE local union presidents who have taken strides in advancing their local's communication efforts.
  • How to Run a Local Election
Find out how to plan and run a local election from start to finish. This workshop covers everything from selecting an election committee and sending out notices, to putting together reports, to understanding how terms of office work, all in accordance with your local’s constitution and the AFSCME Election Manual.
  • How to Have a Great Meeting
It’s more than just having great ideas! Learn about what you can do before, during, and after the meeting so it runs as productively as possible. Get solid on minutes and reports, learn tips and tricks for using Robert’s Rules to keep things on track, and talk about what you can do to get people there in the first place!

Day 2 Workshops and Events

  • Money Matters
Keeping a good eye on your local’s finances is more than just being responsible to your fellow members - it’s the law! Learn about key components of the AFSCME Financial Code, expense reimbursements, and how to avoid common mistakes made by even the most experienced officers.
  • Dynamic Data
Those membership reports we send you every month? They’re full of important information to help you understand your local better and make it more inclusive. Learn how to read and sort the reports, and discuss ways to leverage the data into plans and action.
  • Politics as Power: What Unites Us
Leading a local is always a challenge; doing it in an election year even more so! Learn how to talk to your coworkers in a way that goes beyond party lines, and how to engage folks who feel that “politics” is something that doesn’t affect them.
  • Talking Up Your Union
You probably know the basics of the organizing conversation – but do you know how to talk to new employees in particular? What about your unrepped colleagues at the worksite? Practice engaging your coworkers in a variety of scenarios, and gain confidence in communicating our 100% Union Strong message.
  • Finance Helpdesk
Overdue documentation? Questions on governmental reporting, or how to fill in your LUAFR? Need confirmation that your monthly financial reports are being done correctly? The Finance Helpdesk is here to assist! Staff will be available during lunch on Saturday, as well as after closing remarks, to answer questions and provide support.

PEOPLE Silent Auction

Our Legislative and Political Action Team is offering up lots of union SWAG, with items both new and nostalgic. The auction opens at 11:00am on Friday and closes on Saturday at 1:30pm (after lunch). Winners will be notified via text and must pick up their items by 4:00pm on Saturday.

Please note that LPA is only able to accept cash or check for winning bids. So dust off that checkbook or ATM card, and help support the amazing AFSCME PEOPLE Program! If you have any questions, please reach out to Danielle Hirano: [email protected].
