As eastern Washington faces one of the worst disasters in the region’s history, with multiple fires displacing thousands of families and some families even, tragically, losing their homes, your WFSE bargaining team met with management on August 5th.

Our opening proposal was to create an entirely new category of leave: Wildfire Disaster Leave. Under our proposal, employees would be eligible to take up to 24 hours of paid leave during a disaster of this kind. Management agreed to our proposal to immediately implement this new category of leave for the current situation, as well as to add it to our union contract going forward.

It’s hard to feel a sense of celebration in trying circumstances like these, but this is a big win for our members at Eastern. We were pleased with the University’s willingness to hear our proposal and respond quickly, recognizing the urgency of this proposal.

In addition to this proposal, our team also presented management with a comprehensive package of economic proposals covering topics including compensation, sick leave, and vacation leave.

We meet with the university next on August 27th and 28th. As always, please show your support for our team by wearing WFSE green on those dates.

In Solidarity,

WFSE Bargaining Team
