Early Learning Center Shut-Down: Don't Let EvCC Board of Trustees Off The Hook!

On May 19, the Everett Community College administration met with parents of children enrolled in the EvCC Early Learning Center, informing them that the ELC would be closing. This closure is a harsh blow considering the area’s reputation as a “childcare desert,” with next to no other options in the community.
The ELC is an exceptional resource for a diverse community of children and families who rely on its services for childcare while going to school, work, and even during chemo appointments.

One of the affected parents, a lawyer, believes EvCC did not comply with the public notice period regarding this closure. The parent is planning to file suit against the college, fighting for the parents and children impacted by this callous decision.
WFSE members will not let the Board of Trustees close the ELC in silence and secrecy.
On May 20, WFSE members and parents impacted by this closure gathered at the Board of Trustees meeting. Speakers from WFSE, AFT faculty, community members, and parents reminded the Board about the real detriment to children that their decisions will have. The Seattle Times sent reporters and a speaker from AFT brought up EvCC’s failure to comply with public notice, independent of the parent who voiced their concerns earlier.

WFSE members are planning to attend another Board of Trustees meeting on June 17. We are standing up for the children and parents impacted by this closure, and letting the Board know we will not silently sit by while they harm our communities.
The choice to balance EvCC’s budget on the backs of children and parents is cruel and will have repercussions for the families who rely on the ELC for childcare assistance. Join us in speaking up for these families and fighting back against cruelty on June 17 at the Everett Community College Early Learning Center.
