On August 2nd, we met for our second bargaining session with WWU. We heard from a representative from the University’s budget office who gave us a presentation on the University’s financial state. We were able to ask questions and learn more about the process by which WWU navigates the state budget and secures funding. While the financial situation described to us was not optimistic, we remain vigilant about the prospect of greater investment in employees at WWU.
Following the budget presentation, the University provided responses to several Union proposals as well as introduced a handful of new proposals. The Union also provided a series of new proposals on topics such as paid leave, union activities, and employee development. Both parties had the opportunity to engage in thoughtful discussions about our respective interests, even as we disagree on some of the specific provisions of one another’s proposals.
Our discussions with WWU remain productive and respectful. We are driving home the message that WWU must invest in its employees. We remain committed to advocating for a union contract that ensures the University lives up to its stated values.
