What We’re Looking For:
The Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) is recruiting to fill a Legislative and Political Action (LPA) Organizer position located in Olympia, WA. Reporting to the Director of Legislative and Political Action, this position offers a unique personal and professional growth opportunity. You'll be responsible for coordinating the union’s efforts to engage our members in the legislative and political action programs, including the member lobby, political volunteer, and PAC recruitment programs.
As an LPA Organizer, you'll play a crucial role in the WFSE Political Program, including educating members about political priorities and recruiting member volunteers. Your work will also be instrumental in developing tools and providing resources to staff and leaders to help engage more members in lobbying, political, and voter registration efforts.
Additional duties include:
- Tracks and maintains member data relevant to the LPA department and provides reports as required.
- Provides support to the endorsement process, including staffing, interviews, and recruiting members in the process.
- Works with the Communications staff to develop materials, mailings, and social media in support of the lobbying and political program.
- Manage member political education efforts via phone banks, direct mail, email, and other tools.
- Use VAN Action Network and other member outreach/recruitment tools and participate in external coalition meetings and plans.
Required Qualifications:
- Two (2) years of experience coordinating or managing political campaigns or organizing grass-roots member activities.
- Possesses a valid Washington driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle, automobile insurance, and the ability to travel are mandatory conditions of employment.
- Previous experience working for a union and knowledge of organized labor.
- Ability to prioritize work; evaluate and solve problems; work independently and as a team, be reliable in completing work and meeting deadlines.
- Excellent people skills and the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge and experience in business management practices, and research methods.
- Highly organized and capable of juggling multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and related software.
- Strong analytical skills using various databases to collect and interpret data.
- Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
- The ability to present information and speak to groups of varying sizes.
- Detail-oriented and able to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficient with remote meeting software such as Zoom, Teams, etc.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in political science, communication, social sciences, or a related field.
Special Note:
- This position is overtime eligible.
- Selected candidates are expected to live within commuting distance of their assigned work location within Washington state.
- This position is eligible for overtime and may be required to work some weekends.
- Travel is usually limited to the designated area of responsibility.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, use of personal vehicle, and valid vehicle insurance.
- A motor vehicle report and a background check will be conducted as a condition of employment.
- Benefits include 12 paid holidays, annual and sick leave, a $150 monthly cell phone allowance, a $400 monthly vehicle allowance, medical/dental/vision, life and long-term disability insurance, 401K, Pension Plan, personal holidays, and more.
- The salary range is $71,478 to $84,431 and will be determined commensurate with experience
