CAPITAL CONSTRUCTION BUDGET (EHB 1075)

Capital Budget Passes!

Great news. Your consistent advocacy for the capital budget (SB 6090) has paid off. The bill passed both the House and Senate last night freeing up money for construction projects and stopping layoffs. It's now on its way to the Governor.

HOUSE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY VOTES TO MOVE CAPITAL CONSTRUCTION BUDGET

1/10/18  The House Capital Budget Committee on Tuesday (Jan. 9) voted 19-0 to kick start movement on the long-stalled state Capital Construction Budget, 2SHB 1075.

This first vote came on just the second day of the 2018 session – and Day 268 since the bill was iced by the old Senate majority over an unrelated water-rights issue. The House has always strongly supported the measure, having passed it 92-1 last year.

The accompanying bond bill (SHB 1080) passed the committee 14-5.

The governor and top legislative leaders have called for quick action on the Capital Construction Budget.

1/2/18  Passage of a capital budget as soon as possible is vital. Critical projects are delayed, costs to taxpayers are increasing, and state employees are being laid off. The absence of a capital budget is having a negative effect on our economy. On Nov. 17, the House Capital Budget Committee learned the harsh impact the capital-construction budget impasse has had. Melissa Palmer of the Legisla-ture’s Office of Program Research laid out the facts. Agencies have identified 488 posi-tions that are projected to be eliminat-ed or reduced between August 2017 to March 2018. These include per-manent, non-permanent and project positions eliminated or reduced. Some positions include vacancies. EHB 1075 passed the House 93-5 in 2017.
