What We’re Looking For:

We are recruiting to fill a Field Supervisor position and searching for experienced leaders in the labor movement who are passionate about employee rights and have the ability to affect change by motivating staff and leading effective member engagement campaigns. This position reports to the Field Services Director and is responsible for leading and supervising Council Representatives and support staff. The Field Supervisor promotes the mission, vision, core values and goals of the WFSE through internal organizing and representation of members across the State of Washington. The Field Supervisor ensures staff receive training, coaching, mentorship, and resources needed to effectively perform their duties. Additional duties include:

  • Oversees implementation of campaigns within their service areas and ensures applicable benchmarks are achieved. This includes contract campaigns, membership education drives, membership mobilization campaigns, leadership recruitment and development, and political action.
  • Performs selected representational work independently or in a mentoring capacity; may include processing and presenting grievances, staffing local and statewide union management communication committee meetings, and acting as chief negotiator in master agreement negotiations.
  • Investigates and resolves complaints from members, labor partners, and state agencies; conducts investigations into allegations of staff misconduct; responsible for corrective action; first level disciplinary actions, and administration of staff union contract. 
  • Ensures staff are meeting Council objectives by building membership structure and conducting workplace organizing with members.
  • May attend labor management meetings as a management resource staff member.

Required Qualifications:

  • Five (5) years of experience in labor relations and union organizing.
  • Two (2) years’ experience supervising staff or three (3) years’ experience of direct leadership of members with measurable accountability.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Thorough understanding of Washington State employment law, labor practices, and labor movement.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Eight (8) years of demonstrated experience in labor relations including time as a paid professional.
  • The ability to effectively work with people, convey instructions to others and supervise staff.
  • Skilled in negotiations, grievance handling and organizing.
  • Knowledge of public sector rules/laws and trade unions. 

Special Note:

This position is overtime exempt and may be required to work some weekends. Must have a valid driver’s license, use of personal vehicle, and valid vehicle insurance. Benefits include annual and sick leave, cell phone allowance, vehicle allowance, medical/dental, life, and long term disability insurance, and holidays. Salary range is $91,425 to $105,836 and will be determined commensurate with experience.
