Followup: Rossi’s bill exposed as blatant political attack
It’s being called "hostage politics."
Working families, Senate Democrats, House leaders today have condemned the passage Tuesday night of Sen. Dino Rossi’s scheme on the Senate floor.
His SSB 5533 passed the Senate Tuesday night on a straight party-line vote of 25-24. Rossi and his backers say state employees through their unions shouldn’t be allowed to donate to candidates for governor, whose designees negotiate with unions on collective bargaining agreements.
But the Tacoma News Tribune article today said Rossi’s bill was a ploy “to limit the political power of state employee unions as part of a deal to approve new raises for state workers.”
The Washington State Labor Council’s The Stand article branded the Rossi scheme as “hostage politics.”
• Another unnecessary “Awful 7” bill (SSB 5339) also passed the Senate Tuesday night, 25-24. This is Sen. Steve Oban’s bill that ignores the existing protections for religious objectors in state employee bargaining units.
