Bill expanding state employee whistleblower protections boosted in Senate
The Federation Wednesday morning (Jan. 25) backed a new effort to expand protections for state employees who blow the whistle on improper government actions.
Federation Lobbyist Matt Zuvich told the Senate Law and Justice Committee that Senate Bill 5374 builds on legislation proposed two years ago. He endorsed an amendment from that time that would go further to protect the identities of the whistleblower.
SB 5374 would a mend the Whistleblower Protection Program to include ex parte communication between an agency employee and a presiding officer that violates the Administrative Procedures Act (APA) or other similar provisions of law.
What that means is the bill clarifies the definition of whistleblowers so that employees feel more comfortable coming forward with important information about state government operations.
